The officers treat us like animals because we are illiterates. Despite such treatment, I am trying to get the required documents. We are emotionally drained. Yet they insisted on police certificates. But my son didn't die in an accident to ask for these certificates. He died due to chest injuries after suffering for four days. The medical team from outside treated him. But they didn't issue any certificates. Where can we get them from? - Umarbhai Ghoda (60y), Kutch.The compensation disbursement process was marked by protests from people who complained of getting too little money, ad-hoc fixing of compensation package and a general lack of understanding about the complex process. In several instances the money people received was not enough to build a proper shelter and ensure a basic standard of living. Media reported large level discrimination, often on sectarian grounds, in certain pockets. Disasters give an opportunity to rebuild the community based on equity. Development agencies remark that current policies will amplify inequalities.
